- What is Workload Management in a VMware virtualized environment
In a VMware virtualized environment, a correct workload management is paramount: it allows to save resources, energy and time and it boosts your virtualized environment to gain better performances. But why it is so important? Let’s analyze how it impacts virtualized environments.
What is Workload Management?
Workload is, in its purest sense, the sum of all the requests made by users and applications of a system. A workload is “platform agnostic”: it means that it can run in physical, virtual or cloud computing environments without problems or misconfiguration. Workload management is necessary for determining the correct distributions in order to obtain optimal performance. With an optimal management process you can maximize workload throughput and boost performances by making sure that no single processing node is overloaded while others are underutilized. Workload management is the process of distributing the different workloads that a system handles intelligently.
Why is so important?
The workload manager of the system fulfills these expectations by controlling access of the workload to system resources such as computing power, memory and CPU through prioritization or other algorithms. The workload manager also ensures that workloads are distributed properly among available execution units or servers.
But in what condition a workload could be defined intelligent and efficient? There are some conditions that must be satisfied:
- when the environments understands its security protocols and processing requirements so it can self-determine whether it can deploy in the public cloud, the private cloud or only on physical machines;
- when it’s able to find alternative computing capacity to optimize performances or when it understand when is at capacity;
- when it controls identity and access controls, log management and warning and alert report on capabilities across all the environment;
- when is totally integrated with the business service management layer, ensuring that end user computing requirements are not disrupted by distributed computing resources, and working with current and emergent IT management frameworks.

Why Eco4Cloud
Eco4Cloud helps to manage workload on the hosts thanks to workload consolidation algorithm. Thanks to its important feature, Eco4Cloud improves workload management in a VMware virtualized environment and obtains better performances, less costs and more resources, without any loss of quality service.
With Eco4Cloud you can:
- prevent overload situations in the use of memory and CPU resources (it lowers CPU Ready time);
- balance the load;
- help to reach an optimal Host Usage Effectiveness. The HUE index is the ratio of the number of servers actually used to the minimum number of servers that could be used to support the same load if they were used at full capacity;
- use powered-off servers to accommodate additional workloads, hence deferring the purchase and related CapEx of additional equipment/capacity;
- reduce the number of physical servers that must be managed/maintained/cooled;
- reduce real estate (i.e. data center square footage) requirements, as fewer physical servers are in operation.
